The Rawlings Center for Public Leadership is committed to creating new generations of public leaders dedicated to transforming the state of Maryland.
The center is a living legacy to the late Delegate Howard Peters "Pete" Rawlings who is widely acknowledged as the one of the most influential political leaders in Maryland's history and one of its most powerful minority leaders. Delegate Rawlings also had a strong reputation for mentoring young people in public service to become transforming leaders in their own right.
Our Mission is to develop the transformational leadership ability of participants at all levels of public life, with a special emphasis on those historically under-represented.
Leadership, we believe, is an action, not a title. In short, leadership will be determined by what you do and how you do it, regardless of the formal position you hold. We also believe that leadership ability is refined and improved through a coordinated combination of study and experience.
Public leadership is not simply the preserve of those elected to office, it includes thousands of others: appointees, non-profit officials, educators, business entrepreneurs, community activists and others who may hold no title, but whose actions shape our state.
