Introduction
Through the Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows Program, students embrace the fundamentals of leadership in action: service to others, a commitment to lifelong learning, and a willingness to take risks and see beyond obstacles.
The Rawlings Undergraduate Leadership Fellows program honors the legacy of Howard Peters “Pete” Rawlings and his work as a Maryland delegate. Fellows develop specialized leadership skills and become champions for those whose voices go unheard in the leadership and decision-making process. Maintaining a commitment to those historically underrepresented in leadership positions is central to this program.
Program Overview
These opportunities provided through the program are both academic and experiential in nature and occur over the course of four semesters.
This program identifies University of Maryland undergraduates who demonstrate a commitment to ethical leadership and who seek to actively contribute to the community by mentoring and encouraging others to do well. Each Fellow’s experience is guided by their interest in a specific policy issue.
Participants begin the program with an inaugural event at the State House in Annapolis, Maryland. A series of specialized activities and experiences enable students to learn about leadership and advocate on behalf of something they are passionate about. Participants work towards a Certificate of Completion and are recognized at an annual ceremony at the James MacGregor Burns Academy of Leadership.
Benefits to Fellows include:
- Personal mentoring relationships with elected officials and state leaders
- Access to renowned leadership scholars and policy faculty
- Field trips to state and federal agencies
- Work on an actual community action project
- Placement in a political or nonprofit internship
- A Certificate of Completion
- Participation in courses and conferences designed to promote a greater understanding of leadership in public life
Staff
Staff members from the Howard Peters Rawlings Center for Public Leadership administer the Fellowship Program.
Participants also have significant interaction with faculty from the School of Public Policy, the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the College of Education, as well as elected officials and campus administrators.
